Hello, beach bums and campfire enthusiasts! Welcome back to our blog at Stacked.Camp, your ultimate guide to enjoying the great outdoors. Today, we're talking about beach bonfires! Yes, that's right - roasting marshmallows with the sand between your toes, the ocean breeze in your hair, and the sound of waves as your background music. Does it get any better than that? We think not.

Before you start daydreaming about s'mores and beachside sing-alongs, it's important to remember that beach bonfires aren't allowed everywhere. Bummer, we know. But don't worry! We've got the scoop on where you can have your beach bonfire, and how to do it responsibly and safely. Because nobody wants to be that person who sets the beach on fire (literally).

Where Can You Have a Beach Bonfire?

First things first, where are you allowed to have a bonfire on the beach? This isn't always straightforward as rules and regulations vary greatly by location. Some beaches allow bonfires, but only in designated fire pits, while others allow open fires anywhere on the beach. Some require permits, and in some places, beach bonfires are totally off-limits.

So, it's crucial to do your research before you head out with your firewood in tow. You can usually find this information on the website of the park or municipality that oversees the beach you're planning to visit.

If that sounds like a lot of work, don't worry! We've done some of the legwork for you, and here are a few of our favorite spots where beach bonfires are a go:

1. Ocean Beach, San Francisco, California:

This beach has designated fire pits that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Remember to check the park’s website for updates and additional rules.

2. Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland/Virginia:

Not only can you have a bonfire here, but you might also spot wild horses roaming the beach! Just remember, you need a permit for your bonfire.

3. Dockweiler State Beach, Los Angeles, California:

This beach offers fire pits, but they're popular, so arrive early! Check out their website for more details.

4. Seaside Beach, Oregon:

This beach allows for fires on the beach! It’s important to bring a shovel to dig a hole so your fire can sit below the wind. One helpful tip: use the sand from the whole to build a wall. This will make it easier to start and maintain the fire.

Remember, this is just a starting point. Always check the current regulations of the beach you're planning to visit.

How to Have a Beach Bonfire

Now that we've covered the where, let's talk about the how. Here are some steps to ensure you have a fun, safe, and environmentally-friendly beach bonfire:

  1. Find a safe spot: If your beach doesn't have designated fire pits, find a spot away from vegetation and other people.
  2. Dig a pit: Dig a pit about a foot deep to help contain the fire and protect it from the wind.
  3. Gather your materials: You'll need kindling (small, easily ignitable materials), tinder (small sticks and twigs), and fuel wood (larger logs).
  4. Build your fire: Start with a small pile of kindling, then add your tinder in a teepee shape. Light the kindling, and as the fire grows, add more tinder and eventually your fuel wood.
  5. Put it out properly: When you're done, douse the fire with water, not sand! Sand can insulate the heat, creating a risk of someone getting burned.
  6. Leave no trace: Finally, make sure to clean up after yourself. Pack out any trash and make sure the fire is completely out before you leave.
